Thursday Thoughts

October 19, 2023

The book of Romans gives us instructions on how we are to live according to our faith. In Chapter 12: 9-13 we are told of the importance of exercising our faith. "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality."

There is a lot to chew on in those verses but everything I read there is an action. It is easy to rest in our nest and do what we have always done but don't you wonder what we miss out on when we do that? It doesn't mean that we don't love the Lord when we are not zealous but there is a lot to see and feel and learn about what the Lord wants us to do when we listen and step out in faith. Why settle for ho-hum? Why light sparklers on the 4th of July when we can jump in the car and go see a real fireworks display? Why eat bad ice cream every day of the week, when you can splurge and go to Smiley's once in a while? Why look at pictures of sunsets that others have sent into the TV weather report when you can go out and see for yourself? Are we afraid of what God might ask us to do? The likelihood of being sent to Timbuktu is pretty remote. But if he did he would equip us for the adventure.

It is easy to get into a rut even in our spiritual life. Do something new. Pray a different prayer. Participate in a new outreach. Join a small group. Get a new devotional book. Talk to people who believe differently than you and listen. Good health practices are important for good health. Emotional and mental health needs are important as well. But our spiritual health is something that will carry over into eternity. Once we accept Christ, our eternal life starts. "God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life." 1 John 5:11-13

So look, alive people! We have much to look forward to. Make a first step and ask the Holy Spirit to meet you there. What new things lie ahead if we take time to get out of our comfort zone?

Blessings,

Becky
