Friday E-Blast March 8, 2024

O my Beloved, You are my shepherd,

I shall not want;
New every morning are your mercies, Great God of Light,
And all day long you are working for good in the world.
Stir up in us a desire to serve you,
To live peacefully with our neighbors,
And to devote each day to your Son, our Savior,
the Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen.

This week, I have been on retreat at the Upper Room Five Day Academy for Spiritual Formation at Roslyn Retreat Center.  The chapel at Roslyn is very beautiful.  It is built on the side of a hill overlooking the James River.  The windows in the chapel are clear windows -- so that you might see the beauty of God's creation as you worship.  Through the windows you can see the clouds changing, the sun rising and setting, the birds flying, and trees budding and dancing in the wind.  Time and space to explore God's creation leads us into an encounter with the mystery of God who loves us, created us and cares for us.

On Sunday, we will celebrate our Girl Scout and Boy Scout ministries.  We will remember the values that are taught in scouting and the importance of our children learning about nature, God's creation, and the world around them.  Scouting gives so many opportunities to do this and to be led by leaders who care about helping them grow!  Thank you, God, for Scouting Ministries!

How are you doing with your Lenten spiritual disciplines?  I encourage you to find one or two simple ways to be mindful of God this season in a different way.  We are about halfway through Lent.  If you are working to focus, keep on going!  If you haven't started yet, there is still time.  :)

Here is our Lent Sermon Series:

THIS SUNDAY!

You are Invited to a fun concert at BUMC

Sunday March 10 at 7 PM

Steel Candey Brass Band

We play a diverse spread of genres, including funk jazz, and rock.  We're a 13 member band made up of trumpets, trombones, saxophones, sousaphone, and percussion.  Led by Wyatt Smith!

Reception desserts may be dropped off anytime on Sunday and placed in the kitchen.  It is helpful if they are plated and your dish is marked with your name.  Thank you in advance.

Singing hymns are a great part of the Methodist tradition.  On Sunday, March 17 at the 8:30 and 11:00 services, guest musician Nathan May will be leading the congregation in hymn singing.

Above all sing spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing.
Aim at pleasing Him more than yourself, or any other creature. In order to do this
attend strictly to the sense of what you sing, and see that your heart is not carried away with the sound, but offered to God continually; so shall your singing be such as the Lord will approve here, and reward you when he cometh in the clouds of heaven.

 John Wesley

In addition to Nathan May, the Sanctuary Choir will sing for the 8:30 service and the Handbell Choir will share music at the 11:00 service.

To God be the Glory!

Blessings,

Joan

The adult reading cart is for anyone, and has a nice selection of really good books.  Stop by and check one out.  Also, the children have a very large selection of books available for all ages.  The children's book corner is decorated for Easter and has a big selection of Easter themed titles.  There is a checkout sheet on the wall -- let's get some new readers.
